23 Athletes selected for the Worlds at Japan National Championship
29 June 2015, Niigata, Japan - The rain storm could not stop the 46,000 fans from going to the Denka Big Swan Stadium in Niigata Japan to see the top athletes earning their world championship spots at the 99th Japan Athletics National Championships.
Kei Takase (Fujitsu) won the Men's 100 meters at 10.28. and Kenji Fujimitsu (ZENRIN) won the 200 meters at 20.32. Chisato Fukushima (Hokkaido High-Tech AC) won the Women's 100 meters and 200 meters at 11.50 and 23.23. Yuzo Kanemaru (Otsuka Pharmaceutical) defended his 400 meter title (46.10) for 11th consecutive gold.
Ekiden stars Kota Murayama and Tetsuya Yoroizaka (Asahi Kasei) won the 5000 meters (13:37.22) and 10000 meters (28:18.53) respectively. Misaki Onishi (Sekisui Chemical) three-peated the 5000 meters (15:18.77) and Kasumi Nishihara (Yamada Denki) won her second 10000 meters (32:06.48).
In the field events, Yohei Sugai (Mizuno) leaped 7.88 in the Long Jump, Naoto Tobe (Tsukuba TP) battled to win the High Jump with a mark of 2.26, and Hiroki Ogita (Mizuno) pole vaulted (5.50) for a first-time victory. Shot Putter Satoshi Hatase (Gunma Alsok) set a new National Record at 18.78 but still short from the Entry Standard. Ryohei Arai's (Suzuki Hamamatsu AC) 84.13 mark in the Javelin renewed the Meet Record in the Javelin. Current Javelin National Record holder Yuki Ebihara (Suzuki Hamamatsu AC) won her fourth consecutive title at 59.11.
The 23 track and field athletes who clinched their berths to Beijing, have either (1) placed 8th or higher at the National Championship and earn a higher mark than the Japan National Team Standard for the World Championships during the Qualification Period or (2) win at the National Championship and earn a higher mark than the Entry Standard during the Qualification Period.
Athletes will still have opportunities to set the marks necessary to be part of the Japanese National Team until the end of the Qualification Period. Athletes in the Decathlon and the Heptathlon will compete in the Combined Events National Championships this coming weekend.
